Cabo Fishing Report – 1 Dorado and 1 Skipjack – August 9, 2023

32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star – Captain Jorge

A colorful dorado and a hard-fighting skipjack highlighted an eight-hour Cabo fishing charter for Jennifer and Timothy aboard the 32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star with Captain Jorge on August 9, 2023. With a full day available on the Pacific, the pair experienced the searching, changing conditions and anticipation that make offshore fishing in Cabo San Lucas much more than simply counting the number of fish brought alongside the boat.

August 9 delivered hot, predominantly sunny conditions around Los Cabos. Historical records show morning air around 82°F, rising to approximately 95°F during the day, with no measurable rainfall. Winds averaged about 13 km/h, or 8 mph, creating relatively manageable conditions for an extended offshore trip.

Water temperatures were equally tropical. Historical August data places Cabo San Lucas sea temperatures around 85°F–87°F for this date, providing the warm-water environment associated with summer dorado, tuna, skipjack, wahoo and billfish activity.

The day’s fishing profile included:

    • 1 dorado
    • 1 skipjack
    • 8-hour private charter
  • 32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star
  • Captain Jorge
  • Morning air: approximately 82°F
  • Daytime high: approximately 95°F
  • Water: approximately 85°F–87°F
  • Wind: approximately 8 mph
  • Weather: predominantly clear and sunny

Jennifer and Timothy had chosen an eight-hour charter, giving Captain Jorge considerably more freedom to explore productive offshore water. Longer trips provide additional range and, equally important, more time to investigate changing conditions instead of being forced to turn toward the marina early.

Captain Jorge continually watched the Pacific for signs that could reveal feeding activity. Changes in water color, current boundaries, concentrations of baitfish, working birds and floating debris can all influence where experienced Cabo fishing captains decide to position their boats and presentations.

The dorado provided the most visually spectacular battle of the day.

Dorado are among the signature summertime game fish of Cabo San Lucas. Their aggressive feeding behavior can produce sudden strikes, followed by rapid runs and dramatic aerial displays. Few offshore fish can match their appearance as brilliant shades of yellow, green and blue become visible alongside the boat.

Jennifer and Timothy’s skipjack offered an entirely different experience.

Built around speed and endurance, skipjack use sustained power to challenge anglers. They may not deliver the same airborne display as dorado, but their muscular bodies create surprisingly demanding fights. Maintaining pressure becomes important as the fish changes direction and continues pulling against the tackle.

Having one of each species gave the pair two contrasting examples of Pacific sportfishing during the same charter.

An eight-hour fishing day does not guarantee that every hour will produce a hookup. Offshore fishing frequently involves periods of searching followed by sudden opportunities. This is where an experienced captain’s judgment becomes particularly valuable.

Captain Jorge had time to evaluate whether to remain with subtle signs of life or move toward another area. The objective was not simply to troll continuously but to keep the boat working in water with the strongest potential.

Blue Sky Cabo Fishing Charter and Tours supports that approach by providing crews with professional rods and reels, live and rigged bait, trolling equipment and proven teaser presentations. Having multiple techniques available allows the crew to change its approach according to water conditions, bait movement and the species encountered.

The 32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star is also well suited to a two-person private Cabo fishing charter. Its maneuverability allows Captain Jorge to react quickly when promising activity develops, while Jennifer and Timothy could enjoy the fishing space without sharing their opportunities with unrelated passengers.

Private fishing becomes particularly valuable on a day when patience is required. Every strike belongs to the group, and the captain and crew can concentrate entirely on their guests rather than rotating anglers through a shared charter.

August remains one of the most interesting periods in the Cabo fishing calendar because warm Pacific conditions can support tremendous species diversity. Dorado, yellowfin tuna, skipjack, wahoo and marlin may all be present, although their exact locations and feeding patterns can change from one morning to the next.

For Jennifer and Timothy, August 9 ultimately became a two-species day.

The final tally of one dorado and one skipjack does not tell the complete story of their eight hours offshore. The experience included a full day aboard a private sportfishing boat, warm Pacific conditions, the spectacular color and acrobatics of a dorado and the persistent strength of a skipjack.

For Blue Sky Cabo Fishing Charter and Tours, successful fishing is about maximizing each day’s opportunities rather than promising identical results from one charter to another. Experienced captains, quality boats, professional tackle and adaptable fishing techniques give guests the strongest possible platform when conditions change.

Captain Jorge and Blue Star provided exactly that for Jennifer and Timothy on August 9.

One dorado, one skipjack, eight hours on the Pacific and two distinctly different battles created another authentic summer Cabo San Lucas fishing experience with Blue Sky Cabo Fishing Charter and Tours.
