Cabo Fishing Report – 2 Dorado and 6 Skipjack – August 8, 2023
32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star – Captain Jorge
Two colorful dorado and six powerful skipjack created a fast-paced five-hour Cabo fishing charter for Kasey and Chris aboard the 32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star with Captain Jorge on August 8, 2023. Departing at 6:00 a.m., the pair had eight fish in the day’s tally before returning at 11:00 a.m., making excellent use of a relatively short morning on the Pacific.
Summer conditions around Cabo San Lucas were warm and favorable. At approximately 6:00 a.m., the air temperature was 82°F, rising to roughly 91°F by 9:00 a.m. and toward a daily high near 93°F. Winds averaged about 14 km/h, or 9 mph, with predominantly sunny to partly cloudy skies and no measurable rainfall. Historical August sea-temperature data places the water around 84°F–85°F, providing the warm environment associated with summer pelagic activity.
The day’s fishing numbers included:
-
- 2 dorado
- 6 skipjack
- 8 total fish
- 5-hour private charter
- 32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star
- Captain Jorge
- Morning air: approximately 82°F
- Daytime high: approximately 93°F
- Water: approximately 84°F–85°F
- Wind: approximately 9 mph
With only five hours available, Captain Jorge needed to turn available fishing time into opportunity. Instead of committing to a long offshore run, the focus was on identifying productive water efficiently and keeping effective presentations working where signs of life appeared.
Successful Cabo fishing often begins with observations that have little to do with simply watching the rods. Experienced captains study current seams, water color, surface disturbances, concentrations of bait and bird activity. Floating debris can also become important because small marine life may gather beneath it, attracting dorado and other predators.
The dorado provided the most colorful battles of the morning.
Dorado, also known as mahi mahi, are among the signature warm-water species encountered during summer fishing in Cabo San Lucas. Their attacks can be sudden and aggressive, followed by rapid runs and spectacular jumps. As a dorado approaches the boat, brilliant shades of green, yellow and electric blue make the final moments of the fight especially memorable.
Kasey and Chris landed two dorado, but those fish represented only part of the action.
Six skipjack added sustained pressure and repeated hookups throughout the five-hour charter. Skipjack are compact, muscular fish capable of fighting considerably harder than many first-time anglers expect. Their speed and endurance create strong, persistent battles that keep anglers working from the initial strike until the fish reaches the boat.
A mixed catch of two dorado and six skipjack also demonstrated the variety possible in Cabo’s warm August waters. Rather than experiencing one isolated hookup, Kasey and Chris enjoyed enough activity to produce eight fish during five hours of private fishing.
Captain Jorge’s ability to adjust the presentation was an important part of maintaining that momentum. Fish behavior can change quickly offshore. A productive lure position can suddenly go quiet, bait can move with the current and feeding activity may develop several hundred yards away.
That is why Blue Sky Cabo Fishing Charter and Tours equips its crews with professional rods and reels, live and rigged bait, trolling equipment and proven teaser presentations. Having multiple options allows Captain Jorge to alter the fishing strategy as conditions develop instead of remaining locked into an unproductive technique.
The 32 Foot Luhrs Blue Star is also an excellent platform for a smaller private group. Its maneuverability allows the captain to respond quickly when birds, bait or surface activity appear, while the cockpit keeps anglers close to the fishing action.
For a two-person group, a private Cabo fishing charter offers another advantage: every opportunity belongs to those guests. There is no need to rotate fishing time among unrelated passengers, making repeated hookups especially enjoyable when several fish are encountered during the same morning.
August can deliver an interesting combination of offshore species around southern Baja. Dorado, yellowfin tuna, skipjack, wahoo and billfish may all move through the region as warm currents and bait concentrations influence their location. That variety means crews need to remain prepared for different opportunities throughout every trip.
For Kasey and Chris, August 8 developed into a morning dominated by dorado and skipjack.
By the time Blue Star returned toward the Cabo San Lucas Marina at 11:00 a.m., the final tally stood at two dorado and six skipjack—eight fish in five hours.
The numbers made it a productive trip, but the experience came from much more than the final count. Aggressive dorado strikes, persistent skipjack fights, warm Pacific conditions and a private boat gave Kasey and Chris a concentrated morning of genuine offshore action.
For Blue Sky Cabo Fishing Charter and Tours, this trip illustrates the importance of combining experienced local captains, professional fishing equipment, adaptable techniques and quality private boats. Captain Jorge took a five-hour window and turned it into eight fish, two species and another memorable summer Cabo San Lucas fishing adventure aboard Blue Star.
