Three billfish releases in six hours made September 20 a memorable morning aboard the 35-foot Riviera Blue Water. LeAnn, Shelley, Aidan and Tim fished with Captain Oscar and the Blue Sky Cabo crew, encountering two marlin and one sailfish. Every billfish was successfully released, giving the group a three-for-three conservation result before returning to Cabo San Lucas Marina at noon.

Cabo Fishing Begins With an Early Billfish Opportunity
Blue Water left F Dock at 6:00 AM, almost exactly at first light, with sunrise arriving only minutes later. The plan for the morning was straightforward: give Captain Oscar six hours to locate productive offshore water and present a convincing spread to any billfish moving through the area. The dredge was an important component of that approach. Rather than representing a single baitfish, a dredge creates the appearance of a larger concentration moving beneath the surface. When a marlin or sailfish approaches the trolling spread, that additional visual activity can help draw its attention toward the boat.
Once a billfish appears, however, the equipment is only part of the equation. The crew has to recognize the opportunity, react quickly and convert interest into a hookup.
On this morning, those opportunities came more than once.
Cabo Marlin Fishing Produces Two Releases
- The two marlin gave the group the kind of offshore encounters many Cabo anglers travel specifically to experience.
- A marlin appearing behind the boat can change the pace of a charter instantly. The crew shifts from searching to execution. Rods and lines have to be managed, the angler needs clear instructions, and everyone aboard suddenly has a job.
- Once hooked, marlin bring power and unpredictability.
- Strong runs can take line quickly, while changes in direction force the angler to stay focused. When a fish comes to the surface, the fight can become even more spectacular.
- Both marlin from this September 20 charter were released.
- For Blue Sky Cabo, that wasn’t an afterthought. Marlin release is a standing company practice designed to give guests the full billfishing experience while returning these fish to the ocean.
Cabo Sailfish Adds Another Fishing Highlight
The sailfish gave LeAnn, Shelley, Aidan and Tim something different. Although marlin and sailfish are both billfish, they create distinct experiences for anglers. Sailfish are known for speed, rapid direction changes and the enormous dorsal fin that gives the species its name. Encountering both species during the same six-hour trip made this charter particularly interesting.
Instead of simply recording three billfish, the group experienced two different styles of offshore gamefish action.
The final result was simple:
- Two marlin successfully released
- One sailfish successfully released
- Three total billfish encounters converted into releases
- Four anglers sharing a six-hour offshore charter
- All billfish returned to the water
Cabo Weather and Fishing Conditions on September 20
- Warm September conditions provided the backdrop for the morning.
- Water temperature was approximately 88.2°F, while air temperature increased from roughly 82°F around departure toward 88°F by noon. Morning wind was generally in the approximate 7–10 mph range.
- The moon was waxing at approximately 71% illumination.
- These statistics are useful context, but none of them independently predicts whether billfish will cooperate.
- Captain Oscar still has to read what is happening in real time. Water color, current direction, temperature changes, bait concentrations, bird activity and visible surface signs can influence decisions throughout the charter.
- A productive location from the previous day may have changed overnight.
- That is why experienced crews continue searching rather than simply returning to coordinates where fish were caught previously.
Cabo Fishing Success Is More Than a Catch Count
- One of the most notable statistics from September 20 was the efficiency of the morning.
- Blue Water departed at 6:00 AM and returned at noon. Within that six-hour window, the group experienced three billfish catches involving two different species.
- There was no need to inflate the story with unrelated catch numbers.
- Two marlin and one sailfish tell it clearly.
- For LeAnn, Shelley, Aidan and Tim, the morning combined warm September water, Captain Oscar’s offshore decisions, a dredge-equipped presentation and multiple opportunities when billfish entered the spread.
- By the time Blue Water headed back toward F Dock, every billfish had been released.
- Three billfish caught. Three billfish released. Two different billfish species during one six-hour Cabo charter.
- That is what made September 20 aboard Blue Water memorable.
