The Cabo fishing report for August 3, 2023 featured a six-hour offshore adventure aboard the impressive 60 Foot Bertram Blue Sea with Captain David, producing one dorado and one skipjack during a warm summer morning off Cabo San Lucas. John, Jose, Micheal, Tomas, Tomas Jr., Elias, Marco, Mateo, Diego, Jay and Jayson joined the trip, with San Jose, California representing the group’s primary home city. Eleven family members and friends made this a true group fishing experience, and the spacious Blue Sea provided an excellent platform for searching Cabo’s productive August waters.
Departing the marina early, Captain David and his crew began looking for the subtle offshore signs that can turn a quiet stretch of ocean into immediate action. August brings extremely warm water around the tip of Baja, and historical records place the water temperature near 86°F on August 3, 2023. Air temperatures were approximately 84°F around the morning departure, with the day becoming considerably hotter as the tropical sun strengthened. Winds were around 11 mph, creating typical summer conditions for the six-hour charter.
The moon was also a factor worth noting. August 3 followed closely behind the full moon, with a waning gibbous moon at approximately 96% illumination. Experienced Cabo captains consider the complete picture—water temperature, currents, moon phase, bait concentrations, wind, birds and changing water color—when deciding where and how to fish.

For this charter, the crew deployed the dredge, creating the appearance of a concentrated school of bait behind the Bertram. Dredges can be particularly effective when searching for pelagic predators because their movement and flash create a larger visual target beneath the surface. Combined with carefully positioned trolling presentations, teasers and rigged baits, the system gives passing dorado, tuna and marlin another reason to investigate the boat.
The payoff included a colorful dorado, one of the signature summer game fish of Cabo. Dorado are prized for aggressive strikes, spectacular aerial displays and brilliant yellow, green and blue coloration. Finding even one can immediately change the energy onboard because additional fish may be traveling nearby. Captain David and the crew continued working the area, adjusting presentations and watching closely for more surface activity.
A skipjack added another hard-fighting fish to the day. Skipjack may not receive the attention given to marlin or trophy yellowfin tuna, but their aggressive strikes and relentless pulling power make them exciting opponents. For a group containing anglers of different ages and experience levels, mixed-species action creates opportunities for everyone to participate.
The 60 Foot Bertram Blue Sea is especially well suited for larger groups like this one. Eleven guests had considerably more room to move around, relax between strikes and enjoy the offshore experience without sacrificing serious fishing capability.
