Cabo Fishing Report

September 3, 2023 – 2 Marlin

60′ Bertram Blue Sea | Captain Alex | 6 Hours Fished

Austin, Kiya, Tyler, Tori, Acen, Jude, Sara, Jack and Mary traveled from the Greater Houston, Texas area for a six-hour offshore charter with Blue Sky Cabo Fishing Charter and Tours aboard the 60′ Bertram Blue Sea. Nine guests shared the trip, including younger family members, as Captain Alex departed F Dock at 6:15 AM for a morning that would produce two marlin.

Blue Sky Cabo is a marlin-release fishing company, and releasing healthy billfish is our standard practice. Unfortunately, both marlin on this charter died during their fights and could not be released alive.

This was a significant billfish morning, but also one that demonstrated an unavoidable reality of offshore sportfishing.

Even when crews intend to release billfish, occasionally a fish does not survive the physical stress of the fight.

Dredge Program Builds the Cabo Charter Fishing Spread

Captain Alex and the Blue Sea crew incorporated the dredge into the offshore program.

Working below the primary trolling spread, the dredge created the appearance of additional bait moving through the water. That larger visual presentation was designed to attract pelagic predators and bring interested fish toward the boat’s offerings.

The program generated two separate marlin encounters.

For Austin’s nine-person group, that meant two opportunities to experience one of Cabo’s most powerful offshore game fish.

Highlights included:

  • Two marlin caught during the six-hour charter.
  • Nine guests shared the 60′ Bertram.
  • A dredge was incorporated into the fishing program.
  • Both marlin unfortunately died during their fights.

Two Marlin Demonstrate the Power of Cabo Sportfishing Catch

Marlin are powerful animals.

A hooked fish can accelerate rapidly, make long runs, change direction without warning and spend significant energy during the fight.

Captain Alex and the crew worked each encounter with the intention of completing the catch and releasing the fish.

Unfortunately, neither marlin survived its fight.

That distinction matters to Blue Sky Cabo.

Our normal practice is to release marlin, and the inability to release these two fish was not a change in company policy or fishing philosophy. It was the result of the condition of the fish following their respective fights.

Conservation Remains Central to the Cabo Fishing Report

Blue Sky Cabo Fishing Charter and Tours is a marlin-release company.

Healthy marlin are returned to the water.

That policy reflects our belief that Cabo’s billfish resource should be protected so future anglers can experience the same extraordinary fishery.

No responsible captain can guarantee that every hooked billfish will survive a fight. The goal is always to minimize unnecessary stress, complete the encounter efficiently and release the fish in good condition whenever possible.

On September 3, the outcome was different.

Both marlin died during their fights, making successful releases impossible.

Being transparent about that result is important.

Large Bertram Supports the Cabo Charter Fishing Experience

The fishing was only one element of this nine-person charter.

Blue Sea’s 60-foot platform was particularly valuable for Austin, Kiya, Tyler, Tori, Acen, Jude, Sara, Jack and Mary. The group included younger family members, including two-year-old Acen, and appropriate life jackets had been prepared before departure.

The larger yacht provided room for the family while leaving Captain Alex and the crew sufficient working space around the fishing operation.

Sea-Bands were also arranged for members of the group.

That preparation illustrates an important part of a large-family fishing charter: comfort and safety need to receive the same attention as tackle and fishing technique.
